A cryogenic valve is used on extremely cold services like liquid nitrogen at -320° F. When you have super cold processes going through a valve, the body of the valve becomes very cold, and can freeze things around the valve. So, if an actuator is too close to a valve body, it can freeze the internals of the actuator and cause it to malfunction. Therefore, we have to add an extended bonnet to the valve. This moves the packing gland in the valve and the actuator further away from the cold process so the valve can work properly.
